Passive mode locking of a Nd 3+:YAG laser with a thin film of J-aggregates as a saturable absorber

Summary:Thin films of molecular J-aggregates of polymethyn dyes were obtained. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of the films were investigated. It was demonstrated for the first time that such a film of J-aggregates can be successfully used as a saturable absorber for passive mode locking of a Nd 3+:YAG laser. The reproduced generation of ultra short pulses with a duration of 13 ps was obtained for two dyes forming J-aggregates.
