Summary: | Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease that rarely involves the oral mucosa. A 49-year-old male patient was referred to the stomatology outpatient clinic with an ulcerative lesion in the labial commissure. The patient had no history of bodily injury or comorbidities and was not under medical follow-up. Upon intraoral physical examination, a moriform ulcerated lesion with irregular borders was observed in the skin and mucosa of the upper lip, specifically in the right jugal commissural region. The patient reported painful symptoms, and the lesion had been evolving for 3 months. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the tissue was sent for anatomopathological examination. The anatomopathological examination revealed a lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory infiltrate, multinucleated giant cells, granulomatous formations, and cylindrical structures within macrophages. These cylindrical structures tested positive for periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Grocott stains. Based on these findings, the diagnosis of leishmaniasis was confirmed. The patient was subsequently referred for treatment. |
