Luminescence properties of BaMg 2Si 2O 7:Eu 2+,Mn 2

The photoluminescence properties of monoclinic BaMg 2Si 2O 7:Eu 2+,Mn 2+ were studied for red emitting persistent luminescence application. With UV excitation at 300 nm, wide band emission of Eu 2+ resulting from the 4f 65d 1 → 4f 7 transition was observed at 400 nm. The emission of Mn 2+ due to the...

Summary:The photoluminescence properties of monoclinic BaMg 2Si 2O 7:Eu 2+,Mn 2+ were studied for red emitting persistent luminescence application. With UV excitation at 300 nm, wide band emission of Eu 2+ resulting from the 4f 65d 1 → 4f 7 transition was observed at 400 nm. The emission of Mn 2+ due to the 4T 1( 4G) → 6A 1( 6S) transition moved from 625 to 670 nm with increasing Mn 2+ content because of the appearance of Mn 2+–Mn 2+ pairs. Both emissions were observed with 300 nm excitation. The decay time measurements suggest high energy transfer probability from Eu 2+ to Mn 2+. The strongest red emission was obtained with 5 and 20 mol% doping of Eu 2+ and Mn 2+, respectively. The decay time of the Mn 2+ emission drastically decreased with higher Mn 2+ concentrations. The Eu 2+ and Mn 2+ co-doped materials showed only short and weak persistent luminescence.
