Summary:Exploring bioactive principles from seaweeds, one of the potential marine resources, draws attention because of their wide array of pharmaceutical applications. In this study, the ethanol extract of the green macroalga Codium tomentosum was subjected to Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis and was screened qualitatively for phytochemical composition. Further, the anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by membrane stabilization assay and protease inhibitory assay. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, phenol and alkaloids. Thirty bioactive principles were identified in the extract that includes tris (2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate, hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester, octadecanoic acid, n-hexadecanoic acid etc. The extract of C. tomentosum exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity. The results indicated that the phenolic compound tris (2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate may be responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity. [Display omitted] •C. tomentosum, a pharmaceutically less studied alga in the southeast coast of India.•GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of thirty bioactive compounds.•Algal extract's anti-inflammatory activity assessed by membrane stabilization assay.
