Summary:A polarized ion source has been constructed giving a current ∼0·1 μA. The background of unpolarized deuterons is 1–2 per cent and of protons, 10–15 per cent. The degree of alignment of the deuterons was determined from the anisotropy in the angular distribution of the α-particles from the reaction T(d, n) 4He. The degree of alignment was found to be P 2 = −0·32 6 ± 0·01, which is in good agreement with the theoretical value P 2 = -0·328 for an orientating field of 10 Oe. From this it can be inferred that the polarization of the protons is ∼50 per cent and that of the deuterons, ∼33 per cent. Cooling the hydrogen dissociator with liquid nitrogen increased the intensity by roughly a factor of two.
