Summary:Much effort has been expended in the last several decades on the science of radiative gases in the atmosphere and particularly CO 2 as a greenhouse gas. Only in the last few years has interest grown in the technology of CO 2 mitigation. A discussion is given on the early development of CO 2 mitigation concepts which has led to a surge in this activity worldwide and especially in Japan. The history of CO 2 greenhouse gas mitigation is short and is actually being made at this First International Conference on the subject.
