Summary:An attempt is made to utilize the Mössbauer effect for study of the ferroelectric-antiferromagnetic material. BiFeO 3. Data obtained in the ferroelectric range above the Neél temperature (T N) indicate that iron has a trivalent configuration but the Fe-O bond is only partially ionic. T N has been determined to be 372 ± 3°C. The strong quadrupolar interaction observed indicate asymmetrically disposed Fe 3+ ions in the oxygen octahedra.
