Summary:The properties of the solid phases formed by the hydrolysis of Fe 3+ ions in NH 4Fe(SO 4) 2 solutions at 90 or 120°C were investigated using X-ray diffraction, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. The concentration regions of NH 4Fe(SO 4) 2 were determined for the precipitation of goethite, α-FeOOH or ammonium jarosite, NH 4Fe 3(SO 4) 2. Superparamagnetic behavior of goethite particles was observed. Mössbauer parameters of ammonium jarosites, precipitated under various experimental conditions, were very similar. The interpretations of the Mössbauer and FT-IR spectra of the precipitates are given.
