Summary:The cultivation in protected environment enables lettuce production in limiting conditions for its development, especially related to precipitation and temperature. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of iceberg lettuce cultivars under five different environments in high temperature conditions. Twenty treatments were evaluated from October to December 2011, using the experimental design in randomized blocks in a factorial scheme 4 x 5, four of iceberg lettuce cultivars (Lucy Brown, Tereza, Gloriosa and Graciosa) and five cultivation environments (shading screens 30 and 50%, term reflective screens 30 and 50% and open field), with four replications. The average productivity and commercial fresh mass ranging from 22.09 to 24.13 t ha-1 and 134.17 to 144.83 g plant-1 among cultivars. The environments that provided the highest averages were shading screens and term reflective screens 50%. The Teresa and Gloriosa iceberg lettuce cultivars are the most suitable for growing in high temperature conditions, because among those who had greater compactness of the head, they were the ones that had lower stem lenght and stem height proportion in the head, since there was no difference between cultivars for productivity.
