Summary: | Background: Root resorption, characterized by the gradual deterioration of tooth root structure, is a frequently encountered issue in orthodontic treatment. The aim was assess the existing evidence on inflammatory root resorption induced by orthodontic treatment. Material and methods: A review of the literature was carried out to identify articles examining orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) published between 2013 and 2023.We search for available on electronic databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct for research studies focusing on orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR).Results: A total of 51 studies that met the criteria for potential eligibility were recognized. This articles provides a comprehensive overview of root resorption, beginning with a clear definition of the phenomenon and its various types, including external and internal root resorption, in addition, this delves into the multifactorial nature of root resorption, elucidating the primary contributors, such as mechanical forces, biological factors, and genetic predispositions. In the event of severe external apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment, force application should be discontinued, and an endodontic consultation should be sought to determine the need for root canal therapy, particularly in relation to anterior teeth. Conclusions: There is a connection between the application of forces and an escalation in the extent of root resorption. Preventing root resorption during orthodontic treatment requires a multifaceted approach, encompassing the use of light forces, regular radiographic monitoring, minimizing the distance of tooth movement, and adopting treatment regimens that preserve the roots. |
