Summary:How can a causal proposition, considered laughable at the outset, become a commonplace in 70 years time? The article distinguishes a four stage evolution in which it appears that political caution, and especially a scientific guarantee played a determining role. These two guarantees were themselves fought for by organized actors, able to work simultaneously on the militant, political and scientific scenes. The efficient mobilization of the social sciences observed here leads us to consider its contribution to the social construction of reality.
