Summary:In this paper we focus the identity construction of a psychiatric patient based on the naratives produced during research interviews. The analysis is developed from a social interactional approach to discourse that understands identity as a social and dynamic construction, and narratives as biographic performances. In her talk, the patient foccusses on her search for health and independence through engagement in work activities. This talk is simultaneously oriented by masculine and feminine stereotyped behaviors: at the same time that she gets strongly emotionally involved with the interviewer, in a typical feminine self disclosure process, she talks about how racional, independent and sucessful she is. It is in this tension that she constructs her identity as a healthful person, deconstructing the image of a psychiatric patient.
