Summary:We aimed to identify mothers’ knowledge on breastfeeding, and to investigate maternal feelings regardingthis practice. Descriptive exploratory study, with qualitative approach, carried out at the Teaching Maternity HospitalAssis Chateaubriand , in Fortaleza-Ceará State/Brazil. The subjects were 10 mothers assisted by the hospital professionals.Data collection was held from July to August/2005, with participant observation and semi-structured interview. Thecontent was grouped in the categories: Received guidance by the service; Advantages x disadvantages; Breastfeedingduration; Breastfeeding feeling. The gathered data to apprehend that the women are aware of the benefits but complainthat breastfeeding is difficult, contributing for the complementary food introduction, thus impairing child growth anddevelopment. We conclude that health education strategies are important, as they enable to develop educational activities
