Summary:The history of China over the past hundred years is not only one of humiliation but also of honorable struggle. The Chinese nation paid a tremendous price to defeat the brutal Japanese invaders and achieve liberation. During this period, seismic activity was concentrated in the central and western parts of the country. Under extremely difficult conditions, our predecessors built seismic stations, developed seismographs, and completed 13 expeditions to 19 strong earthquakes with epicenter intensities greater than Ⅶ. After the founding of New China, comprehensive studies were carried out on the seismicity, rupture mechanisms, and activity characteristics of large earthquakes in the western region. In particular, the studies of the 1902 Atushi M8.3 earthquake, the 1931 Fuyun M8 earthquake and the 1950 Zayu M8.6 earthquake have yielded significant results. A deeper understanding of the dynamics of the Tien Shan-Baikal active tectonic belt and the Himalayan collision zone has been achieved.
