Summary:The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) whose origins date back in the 1970s is the world’s biggest organization for regional security. The article is portraying the evolution and the current role of the OSCE, its achievements, failures, strengths and weaknesses, as well as the challenges the Organization is faced with. Eleven years after the last Summit in Istanbul (1999), OSCE Heads of States and Governments met together, in Astana, on 1st and 2nd December, in order to assess the evolution of the situation in the region and to address the urgent problems such as reform of the OSCE, protracted conflicts, transnational threats and the situation in Afghanistan. It was a chance for renewal, and an opportunity to „reset” relations after so many years of tensions, even war within the OSCE area. The article makes an analysis of the significance of the Summit, it is results and failures, as well as the prospects for the future of the OSCE.
