Summary:Sebastian Covarrubias’s Tesoro de la lengua castellana is analyzed in this paper from the perspective of social history studies, in an effort to build sematic fields around two opposing social categories: «the lowly people» and the nobility. Through analysis of the language itself we can shed light over the Estates society of the Old Regime, thus being able to explain to the modern reader the ideological representations by which sixteenth- century Spanish people understood society and social facts.
