Summary:The condition of the italian prisons is tragic and worrying, despite, during the pandemic period, the situation was little better. Statistic data show which are the worst problems of the italian places of detention: overcrowding, excessive use (rectius abuse) of the pre-trial detention, criminalisation of the weaker people, very high and dramatic number of suicides. The inmates are forced to live in a idleness condition rather than in the prospects of social reintegration. To rethink execution in the sense of humanising and resocialising punishment a strong political will is needed, even if, today, it’s hard to imagine. Maybe, a feeble hope can be seen in the aims pursued by the Cartabia reform. For now, however, the prison continues to be a non-place.
