Summary: | These article inquiries into a key category of Lotus Sutra Buddhism: the real test. Through their compliance, its members claim to prove their faith. Under a pragmatic perspective that analyzes religious practices as any activity defined by a belief, we developed an ethnographic study in the Buddhist community of the City of Buenos Aires, where we were able to observe the experiences of faith that its members go through in relation to this mechanism of test. In this sense, in the article, we first recover the native definition of “real test”; secondly, we analyze the procedures used by Buddhists to account for and recognize a real test as such; thirdly, we show the narrative formats under which Buddhists relate a real test, emphasizing both the coherence of said story and its mood-attitudinal implications. Finally, we show the importance of public feedback on the shared story. In the conclusion, we reflect on the configuration of these tests, as an alternative way of building religious faith. |
