Summary:This article analyzes the experience of three universities in the city of Bogota in which they were designed and implemented programs to prevent the consumption of alcohol. In two universities, with peculiarities in each one, the program was called “Tómate el control” and in the third university was named “Toma la decisión”. The analysis of the characteristics of the programs, the implementation process and the reported results suggest that prevention alcohol consumption programs may make greater achievements in the university environment if they start from the reality of the particular context, are defined as institutional policies, if the educational community appropriates them, and are conducted under participatory process of all levels of the institution El presente artículo analiza la experiencia de tres universidades de la ciudad de Bogotá en las que se diseñaron e implementaron  programas de prevención del consumo de alcohol. En dos universidades, con particularidades en cada una, el programa se denominó “Tómate el control” y en la tercera universidad fue llamado “Toma la decisión”. El análisis de las características de los programas, el proceso de implementación y los resultados reportados sugieren que los programas de prevención del consumo de alcohol podrán lograr mayores alcances en los ámbitos universitarios si parten de la realidad del contexto particular, son definidos como políticas institucionales, si la comunidad educativa se apropia de ellos, y se realizan bajo proceso participativo de todas las instancias de la institución.
