Summary:The aim of this article is to show the organization and the character of the Czechoslovak notary’s office in the years 1948–1989. After 1948 Czechoslovak coup d’état notaries were reorganized so that in the course of time they became state officials and were submitted to the courts. The main task of the notary’s office was purportedly to serve the socialist society and to protect rights of proletariat. The task of this text is also to show the real motives of the authorities, which have become a premise for the changes that have been carried out. Even if there were some changes in the law until the mid-1960s, this status of the notarial institution lasted until 1992 when the notary’s office was reorganized again.
