Summary:The functionality of figures of speech shows itself through the influence they have upon communication, through the modifications they bring to the interpersonal relationships between the actors of the discourse situation. Five roles are generally assigned to figures of speech: an esthetical role, phatic role, a pathemic role, a cognitive role and a persuasive role.
