Summary: | The European refugee crisis hit Hungary earlier than other European countries and has been a salient issue on the political agenda for the last two and a half years. The article analyses the legal as well as symbolic measures taken by the Hungarian government from 2015 to March 2017 within the frame of the European legal context. It argues that the recent tendency of framing refugee and asylum policy as a matter of securitization, especially in times of crisis, has been deliberately used by the Hungarian government of Viktor Orbán as a strategy to improve its crumbling support among its citizens. This argument is corroborated by the fact that although the number of refugees arriving in Hungary has dropped significantly, the government still tries to maintain the crisis scenario, warning of new waves of refugees and implicitly the threat of terrorism. |
