Summary:The general elections in Hungary in April 2014 brought another landslide victory for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party. This victory, however, could only be achieved through a series of institutional changes in advance. The election campaign was dominated by scandals rather than actual contents. Fidesz and its ally, the Christian Democratic People’s Party, did not even submit an electoral programme but campaigned under the slogan “We’ll continue”. In domestic as well as foreign policy no paradigm shift can be expected of the third Orbán government. But there are changes in the structure of the new government which will have far-reaching domestic and foreign policy implications. Orbán’s speech in July 2014 about building an “illiberal democracy” raises fears of an authoritarian regime. Conflicts with the European Union and the United States show that the prospect of Hungary’s international isolation might become a reality.
