Summary: | This paper tries to define the elements that configurate the identity of a space situated on the outskirts of a town, that characterized in the past the history of Bucharest. The word „mahala” is quite difficult to translate into other languages and, nowadays, it has a peiorative connotation, but this thing didn’t occur in the past. In this paper, I studied the social and geographical aspects of this space for the nineteenth and twentieth century and I paid special attention to the human tipology of the peasant, the immigrant at the confluence of two cultures: the rural culture and the urban culture. |
