The Security Service (Służba Bezpieczeństwa, SB) was interested in Marian Jurczyk because of his participation in the workers’ protests in December 1970 and Jan- uary 1971 in Szczecin, and his later contacts with protests’ other particinants, in particular with Edmund Bałuka. Owing to the actions of the political police, this milieu was broken up, and Bałuka went into exile. When he began publishing in Paris the anti-regime magazine Szerszeń [Hornet], which was smuggled into Poland, the SB increased its surveillance of his former colleagues, including Jurczyk. He was recruited as a secret collaborator under the pseudonym “Święty” in the summer of 1977. His task was to provide the security organs with information about peo- ple distributing Szerszeń. At the same time, another agent in the same milieu was also recruited — Henryk Jarczewski (Secret Collaborator “Bolek II”/”Rybak”), who proved to be more “operative” than Jurczyk. As a consequence, cooperation with Jurczyk was neglected. His attitude noticeably changed after Pope John Paul II was elected. He then began to avoid meetings and was caught lying several times by his case officer. Jurczyk’s contacts with the SB were suspended in the autumn of 1979. The political police attempted to renew them after he opposed the August ’80 strikes in Szczecin, but he refused to cooperate further.
