Summary:Indonesia has placed a high priority on the development of biotechnology. The State Minister of Research and Technology has designated four national centres of excellence to coordinate R & D in agricultural, medical and industrial biotechnology. Applications of biotechnology in agriculture are the responsibility primarily of AARD, carried out at eight research institutes. AARD (1990) published a major study detailing its proposed Programme of Research in Agricultural Biotechnology. (Office of the State Minister for Research and Technology, 1985), laid the framework for biotechnology development. A National Committee for Biotechnology was established to assist the Minister in coordinating R & D and in developing guidelines for government policy in the promotion of biotechnology. A major personnel training programme within Indonesia and abroad is in progress.
