Summary:The present volume consists of selected papers from the proceedings of the International Conference on History of Mechanical Technology and Mechanical Design -2012 (ICHMTMD2012). This conference evolved from the China-Japan International Conference on History of Mechanical Technology (CJICHMT). Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).More than 100 papers, from Mainland China, Taiwan and Japan were submitted, to the present conference. All of the papers were subjected to peer review by at least two expert referees, and the best papers were selected for publication in this volume.This work presents 56 selected papers from a March 2012 conference. Material is not divided into separate chapters or sections. Some paper topics include a cascade controller design for compliant actuators, meshing efficacy analysis of a gear reducer for a gear motor, operation sequencing using a genetic algorithm, and the application of a thermoelectric cooling module in a vehicle braking system. Other topics include curvature analysis of conjugate surfaces via a tensor approach, dynamic analysis of an extendible support structure, determining optimal sizes for a ball-valve micropump channel, development of flapping ornithopters by precision injection molding, and a multi-dimensional model and version control method for small-batch production.
