Summary:Fatigue is a prevalent symptom experienced by patients receiving hemodialysis. The purpose of this study was to develop a scale of hemodialysis-related fatigue. The dimensions of fatigue were first identified based on a literature review, which was used to form 37 items as a pool and were administered on 204 hemodialysis patients recruited from three hemodialysis centers located in southern Taiwan. Twenty-six items were extracted based on the result of factorial analyses that were categorized into five factors: ”reduction in vigor and motivation”, ”reduction in physical ability”, ”reduction in mental ability”, ”reduction in daily activities”, ”distress and loss of control in mood.” These five factors well explained 50.19% of the total variance. The Cronbach's α coefficient of the total scale, consisting of 26 items, was 0.91, while the Cronbach's α coefficients of the five subscales were in the range from 0.72 to 0.85. The correlation coefficient of hemodialysis fatigue scale with the fatigue visual analogue
