Summary:Hazards analysis critical control point (HACCP) methods are used in many industries to provide quality outcomes. The HACCP provides a logical framework to understand reproduction as a series of time‐related events and actions needed to improve reproductive performance. This chapter discusses the need for risk assessment in reproductive management. The critical control points in reproductive performance in dairy cows and the critical management control points are discussed to maintain and improve fertility. Female fertility can be best managed by ensuring that pre‐calving nutrition maintains appetite and reduces periparturient disease. The process of examining the management tasks required to achieve good fertility identified a series of time‐related critical management points that can be used both to reduce the risk of management failure and as a tool to focus diagnostic efforts. Good fertility is only achieved by careful attention to all aspects of reproductive management.
