Summary:Steam trap management is an essential component of any comprehensive energy management program in a facility that uses steam. The key component of the steam trap management program is the survey. Effective management involves much more than the survey itself. The survey identifies problems and possible improvements; the program corrects the problems, and executes and sustains the improvements. Several factors illustrate the benefits of a typical program and can serve as motivators; leaking steam costs, production impacts, maintenance costs, personnel safety and environmental impact. This chapter discusses each of these elements. It also explains why a company might struggle with implementing a program to manage steam traps, as well as ways to justify such a program. A steam trap is a device used to discharge condensate and noncondensable gases with little to negligible loss of live steam when functioning to manufacturer's specifications.
