Summary:The treatment of pneumothorax in dogs and cats vary depending upon the etiology, severity, and type. There are many causes of pneumothorax, but the main categories are traumatic, iatrogenic, and spontaneous. To understand the pathophysiology of pneumothorax, it is imperative to review the normal physiologic interaction of the lungs, pleura, pleural space, and thoracic wall. Patients that present with pneumothorax may present with widely variable clinical signs, from almost no abnormalities detected on physical examination to severe respiratory and even cardiovascular compromise. Thoracic radiographs can be taken to confirm the diagnosis of a pneumothorax, but are rarely indicated in patients presenting with severe respiratory distress. The majority of cats which present with spontaneous pneumothorax may be treated successfully with nonsurgical therapy and have a better prognosis than dogs treated with medical management.
