Summary: | In recent years, e-scooters became a popular transport mode, mainly covering the “first/last mile” in the trip-chain. The recent pandemic increased the use of these vehicles because it allows social distancing. While e-scooters are already part of the daily landscape in other countries, in Italy, and especially in Sicily, their diffusion has only recently started. Operators have seen demand growth, that created several critical issues referring to vehicle maintenance and vandalism. Although e-scooters tend to be a transport solution with enormous potential, especially in overcrowded cities with increasing private car traffic, several legislative issues need also to be resolved before these can be genuinely successful. This paper shows how to improve strategic planning for e-scooter micro-mobility utilising a SWOT analysis. The paper also identifies four urban poles of attraction and analyses e-scooter suitability in terms of travel time by employing isochrones for 5, 10 and 15 min. |
