Summary: | The avulsion of the supraglenoid tuberosity is the most common fracture of the shoulder joint. Traumatic luxations of the shoulder joint are uncommon. This is likely due to its heavy musculature and its proximity to the rib cage, which further helps to protect and stabilize the joint during a trauma. Lateral luxations are typically seen in larger breed dogs as a result of trauma. General practitioners are encouraged to manage acute luxations. As with all joint fractures, surgical treatment is definitely the treatment method of choice. If referral or surgical repair are not options, then a Velpeau sling or spica splint can be used to immobilize the fracture and allow it to heal. Limb function will be significantly impaired with a shoulder luxation that is not reduced. Over time, the pet will likely learn to use the now abnormal limb with reasonable success. |
