Summary:A trace amount (0.6 mole % with respect to aldehyde or 1,3-dicarbonyl compound) of an aqueous solution of zinc tetrafluoroborate has been used as a mild, efficient and almost neutral catalyst for a one-pot three component condensation of aldehydes, 1,3-dicarbonyl compound and urea or thiourea to afford the corresponding 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2 (1H)-ones (DHPMs) and thiones in high yields at room temperature.
