Summary:Limb-threatening conditions and actual loss of limb are complex situations that require an appreciation of the treatment options as well as potential outcomes and treatment courses associated with therapeutic interventions. Decisions about salvage and amputation have lasting effects on the patient and, in various settings, can take a patient down a pathway that can have excellent or catastrophic results. Many of these courses have no clear road map, and experience can be a caregiver’s best guide. An awareness of the various options and access to skilled healthcare providers are necessary to avoid offering only a limited clinical perspective in these challenging clinical scenarios.
