Summary:The Royal Australian Army Dental Corps regards John Keith Henderson as the first Australian to provide dental treatment to troops on active service. At the time, he was a third-year dental student at the University of Sydney who had enlisted as a Private in the Australian Army Medical Corps at the outbreak of World War I. He served in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force that deployed to German New Guinea in 1914. The lessons learnt from the emergency dental treatment he provided to Australian personnel in that campaign contributed to the formation of an Army Dental Service in 1915. Henderson transferred to the Australian Imperial Force as an infantry soldier, fought at Gallipoli and was later killed in action as a Captain in France in 1916.
