Summary:We designed a point-of-care communications interface unit (PCCI) which integrates patient data from bedside monitors, life support devices, laboratory analyzes and Patient Information Management Systems (PIMS). The PCCI communicates with each source, converts the data to a standard format, generates bedside displays, and performs internal checks to ensure data accuracy and reliability. The acquired patient information is organized into six classifications and displayed on bedside video monitors. Patient specific screens and printouts are available at the bedside for each category of information. Screen selections are made from a compact ten-button keypad located at the patient station. We continue to study the impact of the system on the caretaker productivity and the quality of bedside information.
