Summary:Two water treatment plants in New England optimized coagulant doses by monitoring particle charge during bench scale testing. Particle charge monitoring has been used as an indicator to assess the general stability of aqueous solutions for some time. In particular, a neutral particle charge is targeted for optimal coagulation to occur. While surface water treatment plants can meet treatment goals without monitoring particle charge, often the coagulant dose is greater than required which incurs secondary consequences. Benefits of optimizing coagulation through particle charge include less chemical use and a reduction in solids management.
