Summary: | Popcorn polymerizations of styrene and methyl methacrylate in the presence of various solvents were carried out by using styrene and butyl methacrylate popcorn polymers as the seed. There were two different linear relationships between the activity of the seed toward vinyl monomer and the chain transfer constant to the solvent. These solvent effects were interpreted in terms of the chain-transfer reaction of the growing radical to the solvent added and the dependence of the solvent quality, e. g., a goodi solvent or a poor solvent, on the polymer graft polymerized in the seed. |
