Summary: | The current article draws a comparison between the 1970 Stereographic projection and the Double-Stereographic projection implemented in ArcGIS under the name "Stereo 70". The former map projection is currently being used in Romania for the execution of geodetic, topographic, photogrammetric and cartographic works. It involves formulae with variable coefficients obtained through Taylor serial development in order to convert geographic coordinates into Cartesian coordinates, while the latter projection uses closedform expressions. The influence of the order of the power series to rectangular coordinates is studied to determine which terms can be neglected towards achieving a certain precision. This is done through comparison to the coordinates calculated via the Double-Stereographic projection. The distortions produced by these proj ections were also analysed. For exemplification purposes, we calculated the rectangular coordinates of the points on the Romanian border using both of these map projections and then drew a map which also contains the circles of deformations in the nodes of the grid. |
