Summary:This article presents a summary of 20th century trade union theory that reflected the dominance of full-time salaried employment within an industrial society organised around the Fordist compromise. The article begins with "classical" theories of trade unionism and postwar theoretical developments, underlining until the mid-1980s, and beyond, the scant attention paid to workers in peripheral labour markets. The transformation of work brought about by the increase in non-standard work and the new situations facing workers required new approaches to labour theorizing and a need for reflections on new modes of action. The article goes on to examine the contribution of the Latin-American sociology of work that had already identified this crucial issue. It ends with a discussion of the challenges facing trade unionism in the current context of advanced capitalism. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
