Summary: | Bruno Schulz's Xiega balwochwalcza (The Idolatrous Book) existed in a dual form, as loose graphics and bound portfolios. Many of its images depict mini-dramas similar to erotic role play. Both these aspects reflect the intimate and participatory experience of erotic art: art directed not to a general public, but to a "true viewer/receiver". With its flexible form and its scenes of erotic role play, The Idolatrous Book engaged artist and audience in a shared experience. When Schulz turned to writing the notion of a true viewer/receiver persisted, becoming the notion of the "true reader" which found its ultimate formulation in 'Ksiega' ('The Book').
