Summary:A mechanic is at the center of aircraft maintenance operations. How well the mechanic performs also depends largely on the level of supportability. To facilitate aircraft maintenance, the supportability function should stage parts (eg, fasteners), tools (eg, torque wrench), consumables (eg, gloves), and equipment (eg, fuel quantity tester) close to an aircraft so that mechanics can complete the work and move to the next aircraft. To be a world-class organization, Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex, located in Middle Georgia, implemented a supportability initiative in its maintenance operations for C-5, C-17, C-130 and F-15 aircraft. The focus of C-5 aircraft supportability has been on three aspects, namely integrator support, facilitate other maintenance (FOM) and task kitting. Supportability is a powerful concept that makes tremendous economic sense. At present, for C-5 aircraft, the supportability function offers integrator support, FOM and task kitting. The integrator support function, which delivers parts, tools, consumables and equipment close to an aircraft, is an interface between a mechanic and the dock.
