Summary:Job shop scheduling by family function is described. All operations for a given order are scheduled one at a time. The extension for job shop scheduling by families is to schedule all orders in the same family together as a group either from the first operation through the last, or from the last to the first. The focal point is the job scheduling batch parameter file. The file contains a series of steps of which there are three types: 1. FLI - initialize a location for scheduling, 2 WCO - schedule a set of work centers and/or operations, and 3. SAV - save the scheduled results. The ideal situation is to schedule all operations required for a set of resources together in the same step. For the best performances in both on-time completion of orders and minimizing step reruns: 1. Schedule bottleneck resources and/or operations as early as practical. 2. Use WIP earliest start dates for assigning operations to the family groups. 3. Whenever practical, avoid using queue time for the first operation remaining for an order.
