Summary: | With downstream data rates of up to 52 Mbps, VDSL is the fastest version of DSL available today. By providing high bandwidth connections with QoS guarantees, service providers can offer bundled voice, video, and data services. ADSL can extend to 18,000 feet on a single copper pair. To provide higher data rates than ADSL, VDSL must sacrifice reach. VDSL spectrum assignment has been standardized along with optional band for longer reach, but line code selection is still in progress. Two proposals are under consideration: DMT (discrete multitone) and CAP/QAM (carrierless amplitude phase/quadrature amplitude modulation). VDSL can be used to provide either symmetric or asymmetric data rates. Several service providers have deployed VDSL to provide digital broadcast TV and high-speed data services. Besides public access networks, significant VDSL deployments in private facilities can provide connectivity over existing copper wiring. |
