Summary: | Hard gelatin capsules have been used for centuries; however, there is a recent growing interest in capsules for their applications in novel drug delivery systems and achieving control of drug release profiles.
Hard shell capsules offer a significant amount of flexibility for the administration of multiparticulates and for the combination of different drugs within the same solid dosage unit, in terms of filling technologies and machine configurations, while at the same time ensuring a robust and reproducible process. In addition, a wide range of systems have recently been developed to achieve an in-line check and control of the capsule weight, even in the case of product combinations.
This chapter provides an overview of the current criteria and processing considerations, challenges, options, and opportunities of encapsulating (in hard shell capsules) of multiparticulates. |
