Summary:This chapter presents general introductory aspects of thermodynamic modeling of common devices in energy systems, along with their fundamental concepts and physical quantities, to provide a sound background for understanding applications of energy systems. There are two approaches in modeling: descriptive and predictive. The chapter focuses on predictive models for thermal systems subject to various operating conditions and design parameters. The chapter covers objective functions and how to select them for enhanced sustainability, optimization constraints for energy systems, and optimization algorithms. It considers more than one objective function when solving for the optimal solution for an optimization problem, via multi‐objective optimization and discusses some of the main practical applications of multi‐objective optimization. The candidate solutions to the optimization problem play the role of individuals in a population, and a fitness function determines the environment within which the solutions "live".
