Summary:The current evaluation and treatment of a wide array of diseases of the colon and rectum center around the colonoscope. The roots of modern endoscopic instruments can be traced back to Philipp Bozzini and the Lichtleiter. Modifications of Bozzini’s design and advances in imaging technology improved the practical application of endoscopy. Breakthroughs in photography and video endoscopy allowed for documentation of various disease processes as well as improved ease of use by endoscopists. Various techniques utilizing the modern colonoscope have been developed for the endoscopic treatment of many disease processes, including select early-stage malignancies, lower gastrointestinal bleeding, and large bowel obstructions.
