Summary:In this chapter, a brief introductory review of tree biology is given. Such a review is meant to preface further analysis and to explain the approach implemented in the book. Especially, a look at how trees basically grow would be useful to clarify the way of subsequent analysis. An analysis of forest structure and growth, in particular its mathematical modeling, is intended to simplify the picture of trees and forest, that is, to consider some of their traits to be more important than others are. An account of biological fundamentals of trees may be rather helpful in doing the work of simplification as it helps to recollect important features of trees that make them quite peculiar biological organisms.
