Summary:We cannot speak of black women in Cuba today without analyzing their history and the qualitative effect that centuries of oppression, especially slavery, have had on their identity. The fact that so little is known in general has rendered invisible a whole history of resistance and struggle up to and including the revolutionary struggles that culminated in January 1959, as well as the building a new society since; and this finds expression in the negative stereotypes that abound. This brief article takes extracts from a larger study whose aim is to make visible elements of that history with a view toward fostering greater understanding of the scope of the problem.
